This Retzer Nature Center family portraits session in Waukesha is one that is especially near and dear to my heart. When we photographed this sweet family, my own daughter was right around the same age as their youngest little one. There is something so special about documenting families during this stage of life—when little hands are curious, giggles come easily, and moments are beautifully imperfect. As a Waukesha family photographer, these are the seasons I love capturing most.
We chose Retzer Nature Center in Waukesha for their family photos because of the incredible variety this location offers. It’s one of my favorite spots for Waukesha family photos, especially in the early fall. Within one session, we were able to explore open fields of wildflowers, winding trails through the woods, and pockets of golden light that made every backdrop feel unique.
Retzer Nature Center allows families to receive a full gallery that feels diverse, natural, and timeless—all without needing to travel to multiple locations. It’s a hidden gem for families looking for nature-filled portraits close to home.
The weather truly showed up for us this evening. We were gifted a warm fall night paired with glowing, golden sunlight that filtered perfectly through the trees. That soft light not only photographs beautifully, but it also helps keep kids comfortable and happy—something every parent hopes for when planning Waukesha family photos.
The kiddos were full of personality, curiosity, and smiles, and I loved watching how naturally this family interacted with one another as they explored Retzer Nature Center together. These candid, in-between moments are always my favorite to capture.
One of the most common questions I get as a Waukesha family photographer is, “How can I prepare my kids for our family photos?” And as both a photographer and a parent, I completely understand the concern.
My best advice is simple: take a deep breath and relax. Your job is to get everyone dressed and arrive at the session. Once you’re there, my job begins.
I bring years of experience working with children—not only as a photographer, but also from my background as a Speech-Language Pathologist. I have plenty of tricks up my sleeve to engage kids, encourage natural smiles, and create space for them to be themselves.
Whether your child is shy, energetic, or somewhere in between, I promise I will capture meaningful moments of each child. When parents feel relaxed, kids feel relaxed—and that’s when the magic happens. You don’t need to worry about where your children are looking or whether they’re standing perfectly still. I’ve got that covered.
All you need to do is enjoy your family and smile.
Sessions like this are a perfect example of why I love photographing Waukesha family photos at Retzer Nature Center. Between the natural scenery, the golden fall light, and the genuine connection this family shared, the result was a gallery full of warmth, love, and timeless memories.
Enjoy this early fall Retzer Nature Center family portrait session—one that beautifully captures the heart of family life in Waukesha.
