Incredible Milwaukee Family Photos, Milwaukee Third Ward Riverwalk Family Session

There’s something so special about watching a family grow through my lens—and this Milwaukee Family photos session with one of my longest-standing clients absolutely melted my heart.

We met for their Milwaukee family photos on a sunny evening along the Third Ward Boardwalk. If you’ve never wandered down there at golden hour, it’s pure magic. The light glows just right, the river sparkles, and the energy of the neighborhood adds a soft, urban charm that makes candid moments pop. It’s one of my favorite locations for sessions with young families because there’s space to move, explore, and play.

This sweet family has been with me since their oldest daughter was just turning one. We’ve documented her one-year milestone, welcomed their second little girl with a cozy newborn session, and now here we are—updated family photos with two beautiful girls who are full of life and curiosity.

As any parent knows, little ones bring big energy—and we love them for it! These two girls had their own ideas for the session (spoiler alert: they didn’t involve sitting still), but that’s exactly the kind of session I love most. We embraced the chaos, played games, and let the session unfold in a way that was natural for them.

Tips for Prepping Small Children for a Photoshoot

If you’re planning Milwaukee family photos with toddlers, here are a few things that can make the experience smoother—for you and them:

Keep expectations light – The goal isn’t perfection; it’s connection. Kids won’t always smile on cue or sit still—and that’s okay. We’re capturing your family as you are, which is always enough.

Bring a favorite snack or comfort item – Think mess-free snacks (like puffs or fruit snacks) and maybe a beloved stuffed animal. These can be lifesavers during slower moments.

Plan around nap time – This one’s big! If your littles are happiest after a nap and snack, let’s schedule accordingly. I always recommend late afternoon/early evening for the best light—and we’ll find a sweet spot that works for your family’s rhythm.

Dress for movement – Choose outfits that are comfy and breathable. Flowy dresses, cozy sweaters, and soft layers allow for cuddles, twirls, and all the natural movement we love in photos.

Talk it up ahead of time – Let your kiddos know you’re going on a fun adventure together. You might even practice taking silly “photos” at home so they’re used to the idea. When photo day feels like a treat, it shows!

During the Session: Let Them Lead

What worked beautifully with this family—and really, most families with toddlers—is giving kids space to explore. We ran down the boardwalk, played peek-a-boo behind benches, collected “special rocks,” and paused often for snuggles. Some of the most heartwarming photos came in those spontaneous, unposed in-between moments.

When parents stay relaxed and engaged (and this mom and dad were pros at it), the kids feel that and respond in kind. We got giggles, hugs, and one amazing moment of both girls standing together, hands clasped like little best friends. Pure magic.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead

I feel so lucky to have captured this family’s journey—from sleepy newborn cuddles to joyful, wiggly, curious toddlers. Sessions like this remind me why I do what I do. It’s more than photos—it’s building relationships, preserving memories, and watching families grow right before my lens.

After their session was done, and all of the snacks were eaten it was time for this family to relax. And my turn to completely take over! Not only did this family get many stunning images to cherish but they also designed and received a stunning heirloom album to flip through with their girls! I love getting physical products to my clients for them to enjoy for years to come. Take a peek at the last photo to see a glimpse into their stunning family photo heirloom album!

If you’re thinking about booking Milwaukee family photos—especially with young kids—I’d love to chat! We’ll plan a session that feels true to your family and gives you images you’ll treasure for years.

Until then, I’ll be over here swooning over these boardwalk shots and counting down until next year’s session with this beautiful crew.
