If you’ve ever Googled “best time of day for photos,” you’ve probably seen the same answer over and over again: golden hour.
And while yes — that soft, glowy light right before sunset is beautiful — as a Milwaukee family photographer, I’m going to tell you something that might surprise you:
The best time for your family photos is not just about light.
It’s about your kids.

Before I became a family photographer, I was (and still am) a wedding photographer. Weddings have taught me how to master lighting in just about every scenario imaginable.
Bright midday sun?
Dark reception halls?
Overcast afternoons?
Rainy ceremony days?
I’ve worked in it all.
That experience is a gift when it comes to family sessions. Because while beautiful light is important, it’s not the only thing that matters. And sometimes, the “perfect” light doesn’t align with real life.
Especially when you have toddlers.

The best time of day for family photos is when your kids are at their happiest.
Not during nap time.
Not right before dinner.
Not when they’re overtired and running on goldfish crackers.
If your toddler melts down at 6:30pm every night, scheduling a 7:00pm golden hour session probably isn’t going to serve anyone well — no matter how dreamy the sunset is.
As a Milwaukee family photographer (and a mom myself), I care far more about happy kids than I do about chasing “perfect” lighting.
Because happy kids = genuine smiles.
Genuine smiles = authentic images.
Authentic images = photos you’ll actually treasure.

Golden hour is beautiful — truly. That soft glow adds warmth and romance to images, and I absolutely use it when it aligns well with your family’s rhythm.
But here’s the truth: stunning photos are not exclusive to sunset.
With the experience I bring from photographing weddings, I know how to:
Find open shade
Work with directional light
Soften harsh midday sun
Use overcast skies to our advantage
Create warmth and dimension in-camera
Your photos will be stunning — even if we’re not shooting at 7:45pm on the dot.

When we plan your session, we talk about your kids’ routines.
When do they wake up happiest?
When are they the most playful?
When do they start to fade?
Sometimes that means a morning session. Sometimes it’s mid-afternoon. Sometimes it is golden hour. Every family is different — and that’s okay.
Your session should feel calm and joyful, not rushed or forced.

The secret ingredient to incredible family photos isn’t perfect sunlight.
It’s connection.
It’s laughter.
It’s movement.
It’s your child reaching for you without being asked.
Those moments don’t happen when everyone is stressed or exhausted. They happen when your family feels relaxed and seen.
As your Milwaukee family photographer, my job isn’t just to find good light — it’s to create space for your family to be yourselves. And that means honoring your real-life schedule.

You can have beautiful lighting.
You can have joyful children.
You can have timeless images that look effortless.
They are not mutually exclusive.
Because when you work with a photographer who understands light and understands families, you don’t have to choose between stunning photos and happy kids.
You get both.
And that, to me, is the real magic.
