There is something incredibly special about photographing families right where life happens—at home. Backyard family photos offer a level of comfort, authenticity, and connection that is hard to replicate anywhere else. As a Wisconsin family photographer, these sessions have quickly become some of my absolute favorites, and this recent backyard family session was a perfect example of why.
From the moment we began planning, this family was open to leaning into what felt natural for them. We talked through outfit choices, background ideas, and how to best use their space so their session felt intentional but relaxed. One of the kindest things this family shared afterward in their Google review was how supported they felt before the session even began:
“Meredith walked us through outfit selection and background ideas before we even got to the session itself.”
That level of preparation allows families to arrive at their session feeling confident and excited instead of stressed—and it makes all the difference.
Backyards tell stories. They hold memories of everyday moments—kids running barefoot through the grass, dogs lounging in the sun, parents rocking babies on the porch. Choosing backyard family photos allows families to be fully themselves without the pressure of a new or unfamiliar location.
During this session, the family decided to kick things up a notch and go barefoot—and honestly, it was perfect. Those barefoot moments added a sense of freedom and joy to the images, allowing everyone to relax and truly enjoy being together. When families feel comfortable, the photos reflect that comfort in the most beautiful way.
As this client shared:
“During our photo shoot, she encouraged having fun (we decided why not be barefoot?)…”
Those spontaneous, playful choices are often what turn a good session into a truly memorable one.
One of the best parts of photographing families at home is how easy it is to include pets. Pets are part of the family, and backyard sessions make it seamless to include them without added stress. This family’s dog joined in for a few photos, and those moments were full of life and personality.
The family mentioned how much they appreciated how engaged I was with everyone—kids and pets included:
“She was patient and helpful with our baby, and engaged with our toddler and our dog.”
Backyard family photos create space for those organic interactions—dogs wandering into frames, toddlers laughing while throwing a ball, parents scooping everyone up in a group hug. These are the moments that matter most.
As a Wisconsin family photographer, my goal is to provide more than just beautiful images—I want families to feel fully supported throughout the entire process. From planning to posing to post-production, every step is designed to help families feel seen, confident, and cared for.
During their session, I brought along simple props like blankets and helped guide them into poses that felt natural while also addressing any insecurities they mentioned ahead of time. Whether it’s adjusting angles, offering movement-based prompts, or simply creating a calm environment, my goal is always to help families look and feel like their best selves.
Backyard family photos are about slowing down and embracing the season of life you’re in—bare feet, baby snuggles, wagging tails, and all. These sessions aren’t about perfection; they’re about connection. They allow families to be present with one another, without distractions, in a space that already feels like home.
Choosing backyard family photos gives families images that are deeply personal and meaningful. Years from now, these photos won’t just show what everyone looked like—they’ll remind you of what life felt like in this season.
As a Wisconsin family photographer, it is truly an honor to be invited into families’ homes to document these moments. If you’re dreaming of a relaxed, joyful session that includes your kids, your pets, and maybe even bare feet in the grass, a backyard family session might be the perfect fit.
And to this sweet family—thank you for trusting me, for your kind words, and for allowing me to capture your story just as it is!
